Sonos New Equipment Registration Failure Fix Guide

These are the currently known options for getting through the problematic new equipment registration Sonos users are experiencing since the May update. (Updated 5/20/24)

OPTION A - New App Force Update (Sonos Recommended)

The nature of the issue with adding new gear via the newest version of the app appears that it may be due to an update that is hanging in the background and not alerting user that it needs to be run. A fix that is working for some is to do the Following....

  • Open App
      • Run Updates if prompted
      • Check Manually for updates in settings
      • Add New Equipment (if failure proceed to next step)
      • Log Out - under account
      • Force Close App (varies by os)
  • Open App
    • Log In - under account
    • Run Updates/Check for Updates
    • Check if new Equipment is in your device list
    • Restart or Finish New Equipment Add (depends on how the first attempt of adding the gear left the state of the device in your account)

If successful, you should be good to go... if not, see the next option >

    OPTION B - App Rollback & Register

If you're having trouble registering new equipment on the newest app version, using the Sonos App 'Roll-Back Guide' we posted about earlier. This is where you replace the new app with the previous version for better control, but it does also seem to allow the registering of equipment to the account and system without issue. Once you have the old app you can then register the gear and revert back to the new app when complete.

Note that while you might be able to use the old app to complete the install and get your new gear running on your account, the old app will likely no longer be useful while that new equipment is in your network. So you will need to revert back to the new app version for continued use after adding the gear.

These steps seem to work best for doing that:

    1. Install new Sonos App or new Update
      2. Login - make sure you are logged into your Sonos account
      3. Connect new equipment, hardwire if possible
      4. Discover/Add new equipment
      5. Update - perform any requested updates
      6. Register device - if this fails -> See our post about Rolling Back Sonos App
      7. Launch old app and if your lucky you will have a new device ‘unregistered’
      8. Complete Setup - Follow the pompts to complete registration with the old app
      9. DO Update when prompted - the device should register without issue
      10. Run new updated app and enjoy using your new device?

OPTION C - Transfer Account to Register (Sonos Recommended)

    1. Install new Sonos App or new Update
      2. Login - make sure you are logged into your Sonos account
      3. Connect new equipment, hardwire if possible
      4. Discover/Add new equipment
      5. Update - perform any requested updates
      6. Register device - if this fails or errors (not registered)-> see step 7
      7. Go to Settings and Select Transfer Ownership (settings/manage/transfer system ownership)
      8. Transfer Account to yourself, enter your credentials for both the ‘old’ and ‘new’ owner when prompted. (all equipment should transfer and now work correct)
      9. Complete Setup - if prompted follow any additional steps needed to complete registration and any other setup steps or updates.
      10. Run new updated app and enjoy using your new device?
